Portraits are my favorite artform. They can capture the life and soul of the subject in a way that nothing else can. For me the absolutely essential piece of any portrait is the “likeness” – does the audience, who is familiar with the subject - recognize that person both in features and personality? When I create a portrait, I guarantee the likeness.

Creating portraits, I work primarily in pencil and oil – and on occasion in colored pencil.
My preference is to meet with the subject(s) of the portrait and discuss composition. Then I shoot photos – sometimes in a single session, sometimes in multiple sessions. At this time I may also do some preliminary sketches. On occasion, the subject is not available and I work from existing photographs. Often I will use multiple photos as reference for a painting or drawing. The final work is completed in my studio.

I often travel out of the area to spend time with a client and to shoot the subject in their environment.
